House passes consumer protection bill prohibiting fees for customers requesting paper invoices, statements

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WAND) — The Illinois House passed a bill Friday to prohibit companies from charging additional fees if someone requests paper monthly statements for bills.

This plan could also block companies from creating surcharges for people who opt out of auto-pay services.

The legislation would not stop businesses from offering a discount to consumers who enjoy electronic or paperless bills.

“This is a newer issue that unfairly discriminates against those who live in rural areas with limited access to technology and our senior populations who aren’t always the most technologically sound,” said Rep. Bradley Fritts (R-Dixon).

House Bill 3148 passed unanimously out of the House. Senators could discuss the plan when they return to Springfield at the end of the month.
